West Stow Summer Event
On Saturday the 10th of June 2010 members of the Fen Edge Archaeology Group visited the West Stow Anglo-Saxon village.
West Stow was the site of an archaeological dig from the 1960’s to 70’s, headed by Dr. Stanley West. Those excavations revealed an Anglo-Saxon site that had been well preserved beneath the sands. During excavations clear evidence showed that there had been a number of houses, halls and other structures on the site. Excavation of the site also showed evidence for pre-Anglo-Saxon habitation with the remains of circular huts and enclosures, suggesting Iron Age occupation.
The village (circa 420-650AD) has been carefully reconstructed on its original site. The excavations showed a large hall in the middle of the village with other houses and structures surrounding it. This suggests that it was a close nit community. There is evidence that the inhabitants had trade links to their home land, shown by artefacts found that are not produced locally. There are also objects from the village on display, telling the fascinating story of the settlement and the people who lived there.
